Triumphant Day for Larkhall's Young Athletes at SUPERteams in Ayr
Christmas Novelty Handicap Race
17th December 2023
On 17th December the
Harriers held their annual Christmas Novelty Handicap Race which was the second
race of their Road Race Championships.
The Harriers were out in force on Sunday 17th December for the Harriers Christmas Novelty Handicap Race which was the second race of the 2023/24 Road Race Championships.
The Christmas Novelty race is the oldest race in the club having been run as early as 1933, over a longer course which went behind the Radstone Hotel and crossed where the M74 motorway now stands. These days the course has been adapted and shortened and the seniors now compete over a shorter, hilly 2.25 mile course within Larkhall, although the race still begins and ends in the same place as it has for the last 90+ years. The club's Junior athletes also took part in a fun, one mile race around Larkhall to the cheers of local residents who came out to support them despite the not so festive rain.
Taking home the trophies In the Senior race was Dean Hill who was the fastest male with a scratch time of 15.45 and Julie Hill was the fastest female completing the course in 16.51. The winner of the Senior handicap Race was Willie Thompson with a handicap time of 14.14. In the Junior race, the fastest overall boy was U15 Aaron Scott in a time of 5.38 and fastest girl was U13 Lacie McNulty in 6.19.
The Full results were as follows. Junior Race: Aaron Scott 5.38, Liam McCready 6.08, Lacie McNulty 6.19, Sophie Brennan 6.35, George Brown 6.43, Michael Marden 6.47, Emma Dooey 6.48, Katie McReady 6.56, Emmily Thomson 7.16, Gavin Lee 7.17, Ross Kinkade 8.14, Josh Holland 8.15, Aimee Davidson 9.00, Drew Reid 10.20, Senior Race: Dean Hill 15.45, Julie Hill 16.51, Rhys Thomson 17.11, Willie Thomson 17.14, Jackie McMaster 21.33, Ted Zokas 22.11, Nathan Dooey 22.26, John Dalton 26.35
Solo performance for Aaron Scott as he managed to avoid the sickness bug!
Sickness wiped out most of our athletes prior to this race meaning that Arron Scott ended up being the only Harrier to make it on the day! Arron headed over to the Strathaven Couse and Coach Alex Kidd was there to get him warmed up. It was a very cold day with a light covering of snow on the course but he put in a graft to complete the course in a respectable time of 17.12. Full credit to Aaron for getting out there when he was the only Harrier on the day.
Some of our Junior Harriers got into the festive spirit at Chatelherault when they participated in the Chatelherault Jingle All the Way 5K, donning their red and white Santa Suits instead of their usual red and white vests for the festive run. George Brown, Emma Dooey, Gavin Lee,
and Calum Hughes were all running on the day and despite it being a fun run, the competitive
spirit of the Harriers shone through as George, Emma, and Gavin finished at the
front of the race, with Callum not far behind. It was a fun way to kick off the festive running season and the kids had a great time. Well done!
Our mini Harriers from the 5-8 group shine bright in their first ever racing experience!
There were a lot of proud parents and coaches on Sunday as the next generation of young athletes from our 5-8 groups were in action for the very first time - and they didn't come to play!
Iris, Lara, Aaron, Archie, Fia and Iona all took up the challenge of this Junior Cross Country event hosted by Springburn Harriers.
Up first in the Boy's Primary 1 & 2 race was Archie, who sailed around the course in 1.52 to get 9th place!
Iris, Lara & Fia were up next in the Primary 1&2 Girls race. Lara & Iris got themselves at the front of the pack right from the off and never gave up 1st & 2nd place for the duration of the race. Lara steaked ahead to take the win by a comfortable distance in 1.58. Iris then completed the double with a strong finish in 2.04 to secure 2nd place and a podium finish on their debuts! Not far behind with a top 20 finish was Fia, finishing strong in a time of 2.26!
Next up was Aaron in the Primary 3&4 race, running twice the distance of the P1&2 race, he put in the the work and stormed around the course in a time of 4.00 for a top 20 finish!
Finally Iona had her turn on the course, running in the P3&4 girls race completing her debut race in a time of 4.52!
All the boys and girls did so well and the club is incredibly proud of how they all took on this challenging cross country course for their first ever race!
This race will be ran again on 28th January 2024, keep an eye out for the entries opening, we'd love to see the whole team there!
Lots of Cross Country debutants at the Kilmarnock meeting of this years West League.
On Saturday 18th November 2023 the Harriers were in action at Kilmarnock for the West League Cross Country. A few of our athletes were getting their very first taste of competitive Cross Country racing and all performed well. This race was also used as our club's Cross Country Championship for the 2023/24 season.
Up first for the U11’s was George Brown who got round in 6:03 and was the first Harrier home, closely followed by Drew Reid in 6:10. In the girls race Emma Dooey completed the course in a great time of 6:20.
U13’s next and Gavin Lees was first home in 12:55 followed by George Thomson in 13.36.
There was drama in the U13 girls race with a sprint finish between Sophie Brennan, and Laci McNulty, so close that it required a video review which showed Sophie only just pipping Lacy at the post. Both girls were given the time of 12:10 in a fantastic race showcasing the talent of these two athletes.
U15 Aaron Scott continued his good form completing the course in a decent time of 16:12. Followed by Rhys Thomson in the U17 race in 23:35.
For the Seniors, Julie Hill put in a great effort to get home in 36.51. William Thomson in his first cross country since school completed the course in a respectable time of 43.04.
Considering the terrible weather conditions on the day all athletes performed admirably. Well done all!

11th November 2023
It was a night of celebration and recognition for Larkhall YMCA Harrier Athletes achievements over the last 12 months.
On November 11, 2023 Larkhall YMCA Harriers held its Annual Awards Night, an exciting evening filled with recognition, celebration, and the spirit of sportsmanship. This event saw the athletes, their families and supporters all coming together to honour the outstanding achievements of the club's dedicated members.
The evening was a memorable one, as members were recognized for their excellent performances in cross country, road and track & field in the last year. The awards were presented to athletes who have shown great dedication and talent in their respective disciplines.
This year’s Senior Male Athlete of the Year was Dean Hill. This year she was a joint winner of the Under 13 Girls Road Race Championship and placed second in both the Track Scratch Championships and Track Handicap Championships. In July she became one of a small band of athletes from the club to be selected to compete for Team South Lanarkshire in the Scottish Young Athletes’ League. At the Lanarkshire AAA Track Championships she set a big personal best of 3.81m in the Under 13 Girls Long Jump, where she finished in fourth place, just missing out on the bronze medal.
Ross, who also started out in the 5-8 year old group, managed to produce some fantastic results despite missing a lot of training through injury. He placed second in the club’s Under 13 Boys’ Road Race Championships and won the Under 13 Boys’ Track Scratch Championships. Back in February, at the Scottish Age Groups’ Indoor Track Championships, he set personal bests in his heat, semi final and final enroute to winning the silver medal in the Under 13 Boys’ 200m. This was his first medal at national level, which is always a big moment in any athlete’s career. He followed this up in May by winning silver in the 100m and gold in the 200min the Under 13 Boys’ age group at the West District Championships.
Other notable winners included Emma Dooey who recorded a clean sweep by picking up four first place trophies in the club’s Under 11 Girls Cross Country, Road Race, Track Handicap Championships and Track Scratch Championships. This year's Endeavour award was presented to Sam Thomson. Sam, who joined the club just over a year ago, loves taking part in training sessions and is a regular attender. He has improved immensely in competitions both within and out with the club.

Harriers come out in force for the Annual Turnip Relay
Larkhall YMCA Harriers kicked of their Winter Road Race Championships with a bang with the Turnip Relay Road Race. The senior event was first held 60 years ago and got its unique name following the inaugural race after one of the club’s most distinguished members, A.B. Perrie, completed his leg of the relay carrying some turnips which had fallen of the back of a farmer's trailer! This year we had a massive turn out and the team competition was fierce. The fastest overall time around the 3.25 mile course and lifting the Senior Mens Shield was Dean Hill in 21.31. The first Senior Woman home was Julie Hill who posted a time of 24.02 which is actually the 3rd fastest for a veteran female in club history. The fastest times of the day by juniors, was set by Aaron Scott and Laci McNulty in times of 9.30 & 10.49 respectively. Well done to all our athletes who took part and its on to the next race of the Championships - The Christmas Novelty, which will be held on Sunday 17th December at the YMCA hall, Doors open at 10:30am! Remember, to count in the Championships you must complete 3 of the 4 Road Races.
Junior Harriers Showcase Grit and Talent at the Scottish Schools Road Races.
In a display of sheer determination and skill, our young athletes, Aaron Scott and Laci McNulty, took on the challenge of the Scottish Schools Road Races hosted at the scenic Pittencrieff Park in Dunfermline.
Facing challenging running conditions, Laci McNulty exhibited unwavering resilience, completing the course with an impressive time of 10.09. Meanwhile, Aaron Scott showcased his prowess with an outstanding performance, navigating the tough conditions to secure a respectable time of 19.41 in the boys' race.
These talented Junior Harriers not only conquered the race but demonstrated the true spirit of grit and sportsmanship in the face of difficult running conditions. Join us in celebrating their achievements and looking forward to more remarkable races ahead!
The age 5-8 club now has a full and thriving "Introduction to Athletics" Group coached by Jimmy Cairney and Alistair Dooey, with assistance from Lisa Dooey. The club meets at the YMCA at 6pm on Tuesdays and has steadily been supplying talented young athletes to the clubs main junior section when they turn 9 years old. The club gives local youngsters the chance to try athletics in a safe and fun environment prior to joining the main club. As there are limited opportunities for this age group to experience athletics it has become very popular, so popular in fact, that it is now over subscribed and is operating a waiting list for new members!
The 5-8 club wouldn't be possible without Jimmy, Alistair and Lisa's hard work, giving up their own time every Tuesday to coach our young budding athletes, for this the Harriers are eternally grateful.
Could you assist us with coaching? If you could commit to give your spare time for a couple of hours once or twice a week we can provide you with free full training to be a coaching assistant and help our club grow. If you're always at training waiting for the kids its a great way to pass the time and get involved in your child's sport. Get in contact if you're interested in becoming a coaching assistant.

Harriers young and old let their hair down after a successful summer season.
We held out end of Summer Season night out at M&D's Cosmic Bowl. Athletes who have been working so hard all season got the chance to let their hair down and have some fun with friends and enjoy a few rounds of bowling. Lots of Harriers came along and we took over half the place for a few hours! Sufficed to say their standard of running is much better than the standard of bowling! Next week the serious business of winter training and cross country begins!
